CHICAGO, Sept. 13 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The following was released
today by the ISRA Political Victory Fund (ISRA-PVF):
In the Sept. 13 edition of the "Chicago Tribune," a spokesperson
for Republican Gubernatorial candidate Jim Ryan issued a misleading
statement regarding the ISRA-PVF's decision not to endorse Ryan's
bid for governor.
The Ryan spokesman claimed that Ryan would have had to declare
support for concealed carry and firearms pre-emption legislation in
order to receive the ISRA-PVF endorsement. The spokesman claims
further that Ryan's refusal to support these two legislative
initiatives cost him the ISRA-PVF endorsement.
That assertion is absolutely untrue.
The ISRA-PVF evaluates candidates based, in large part, on their
ability to impact issues important to the state's law-abiding
firearm owners. Both concealed carry and firearms preemption are
legislative issues and, therefore, serve more appropriately as
criteria for evaluating candidates for the Illinois General
Assembly.
On the other hand, Jim Ryan is running for Governor, which is,
of course, the state's chief executive. Therefore, criteria used
to evaluate Ryan would relate to how the executive branch of state
government might positively impact issues important to the state's
1.5 million law-abiding firearm owners.
In keeping with those evaluation criteria, the ISRA-PVF
communicated to the Ryan campaign 4 key actions that the candidate
would have to take in order to be considered for endorsement.
Those actions are as follows:
1. A commitment to constructing 6 public shooting ranges around
the state. These ranges would be operated by private sector
concessionaires with a portion of the profits being used to recoup
taxpayer monies used to fund construction.
2. A commitment to evaluate the disbursement of federal grants
made to the state under the Pittman-Robertson Act. Such grants are
supposed to fund wildlife management programs. However, many
hunting and fishing groups are concerned that the funds are being
directed to pork-barrel projects rather than being spent for their
intended purpose.
3. A commitment to a proactive program to expand hunting and
fishing opportunities on state-owned lands.
4. A positive, public statement that, if elected, the Ryan
administration would not use the state's 1.5 million law-abiding
firearm owners as "whipping boys" for crime control programs.
Those are the 4 things the state's gun owners wanted to hear
from Jim Ryan. Certainly, most citizens would find those 4
criteria to be reasonable and appropriate. Nonetheless, the Ryan
campaign flatly refused to address those 4 simple concerns.
That is why Jim Ryan was not considered for endorsement by the
ISRA-PVF.
"Throughout the campaign, the Ryan camp has been telling us that
'Jim is better than Rod (Blagojevich)'," commented ISRA-PVF
chairman Jim Vinopal. "Ryan's refusal to make a commitment on
these four simple, but critical issues states quite plainly that
no, Jim is not better than Rod. Not better at all."
The ISRA-PVF is a political action committee affiliated with the
Illinois State Rifle Association. The Illinois State Rifle
Association is the state's oldest, and largest firearm owner's
organization. A copy of our report is available for a fee from the
Illinois State Board of Elections, Springfield, IL.
