RUTLAND -- Several firearms, including a police-issued handgun, were stolen from a Rutland City police officer's home in the latest in a series of daylight burglaries.

The break-in took place Saturday morning at the home of an unidentified officer. Police would only say that the officer lives in the northwest part of the city.

Stolen were two handguns, several hunting rifles, handcuffs, pepper spray, a portable police radio and a Hewlett-Packard personal digital assistant.

Police declined to release the make and caliber of the guns.

"There is a concern whenever any gun is taken, but we don't want to alarm people," said Sgt. Rodney Pulsifer. "What's probably happening is they're taking these to sell. They want cash."

Pulsifer said police would be able to easily trace the police-issued gun, wherever it turns up.

"We have a couple of suspects that we're looking at," he said.

Police believe the robbery is related to a break-in in the same area earlier in the week and possibly to the string of burglaries that took place in the southeast section of the city Friday.

"We don't really know the reason for the sudden rash yet," Pulsifer said. "I think once we catch the person, we'll be able to say a little more about what it is."

A gun was also stolen from one of the homes burglarized Friday - an antique 1934 German army rifle.

In another of the five burglaries reported Friday, a woman came home just in time to find a man trying to leave her driveway on her husband's motorcycle.

The man fled on foot, and police searched the area with several dogs, but were unable to locate the suspect.

Police are asking everyone to be aware of what is happening in their neighborhoods and to report any suspicious activity to 773-1816.
