Gun show booth owner charged
Associated Press
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - A man who ran a booth at a suburban Atlanta gun show was charged with a misdemeanor Thursday in the death of a 13-year-old boy who was accidentally shot at the show last month.
Cleveland Lewis Chaney had put his own gun in a holster in a demonstration for Steven Bray King and his father when the weapon fired. King, of Prattville, Ala., was shot in the head and died later at a hospital.
Police spokesman Ray Dunlap said investigators have not determined who pulled the trigger. Chaney was charged with misdemeanor involuntary manslaughter because it was his gun and because the shooting happened at his booth, Dunlap said.
"It was definitely accidental," Dunlap said. "But our investigators have determined Chaney was the one responsible for the death."
Police said they expected Chaney, 57, of O'Brien, Fla., to turn himself in.
Chaney owned a concession that sold holsters and related items at an Eastman Gun Shows event in the Atlanta suburb of Norcross.
Telephone calls seeking comment from Chaney and King's father, Anthony Grant, went unanswered Thursday.
Joe Wargo, attorney for Eastman Gun Shows founder Matthew Eastman, said that although the shooting was tragic, no changes have been made in how the shows are run.
