WEIN TAKES HIGHROAD
Offers Pataki Televised Solutions Forum
Staten Island, NY ---In anticipation that his name will be restored to the Republican primary ballot by the federal courts next week, Louis de la Guardia Wein, in a letter to Governor George E. Pataki today, offered a new and innovative proposal for the candidates to demonstrate their solutions to the nagging problems that seem perennially to burden the state and the taxpayers. "Let's do our part, together, to help make your vision of building "confidence in our elections" a reality", Wein wrote.
In his letter, the Republican challenger said: "Painfully aware of the incredibly short time we will have to campaign, I am recommending that, in a spirit of serving the public good, we agree to five televised SOLUTION FORUMS moderated by a panel of news and media representatives". He continued, "Our times deserve more than cheap shots and empty rhetoric as we face the crisis of the attack we ALL suffered on September 11, 2001: an attack on the very foundations that has made America, America."
Wein challenged the Governor to live up to his own words following the 2000 Presidential primary: "Last week's primary was decided on the issues, the character and the vision of the candidates. The voters had a chance to hear all the candidates and make their decisions. That's the way it ought to be".
According to Wein's letter, his proposed Solutions Forum would create a new standard for both candidates and the press. "It would forego fluff for substance. The Forum approach would serve as an educational tool for a dumbed-down America that is drowning in its own ignorance, especially ignorance of the roots of our cherished freedoms that we seem to be losing more and more by the day", Wein wrote.
The Solutions Forum format would consist of a one hour televised presentation. Each candidate would have a 6 minute opening remark. Asserting Governor Pataki's wishes for enlightened intellectual exchange between candidates, Wein insisted they "must focus their remarks on their solution NOT the other candidate". The news/media panel would then have 20 minutes to ask questions of the candidates followed by 4 minutes for each candidate to further develop his Solution Pan.
The press would again be allowed to ask questions with the candidates closing having a 2 minute closing statement.
Knowing of Governor Pataki has an aversion to debate, Wein suggested, "The time has come to forego the "gotcha" mindset of electioneering." The would-be primary challenger continued, "My proposed Solutions Forum accommodates your understandable reluctance to engage in televised debate that really serves nothing more than a tool of campaign political spin-doctors to grab headlines with well rehearsed 4-second sound bites or staged serving of papers. The "attack dogs" have to be called off - at least during the proposed Solutions Forum.
The Wein letter outlined that these forums would depart from the "typical self-serving rhetoric and challenger-bashing that accompanies political debates that turns most people off and diminishes voters' confidence in the political process and elections. Rather the focus would be to present our respective detailed solutions on the following topics: (1) Government Reorganization; (2) Campaign Reform; (3) Tax Reform; (4) Economic Development; and, (5) Education".
Wein also asserted, "These are the major issues that confront responsible stewardship of the 'peoples' trust. They are at the core issues in resolving the nagging problems government just can't seem to get control of without taxing the people, the working stiff, into the ground".
The candidates would enter into an agreement that would prohibit any sort of political or personal attack. While at first blush it would appear that the program would be flat with no "sparks" flying, Wein contends, "Based on my 35 years of political experience, that the Forum could be lively, very educational and begin a process in which candidates will be forced to focus on the issues in a meaningful way. Idealistic? Yes. But what is wrong with ideals. And the truth be told, very few citizens watch the debates which are more noted for their next morning headlines than the content of what was said".
Wein took a pointed jab at the press when he wrote: "My Solutions Forum proposal also encourages the press and media to be more responsible in the way they cover campaigns. In many ways, the press shoulders a major responsibility in the shallowness of campaigns. They promote the round robin of name-calling and headline-grabbing rather than problem-solving. Obviously, name-calling attacks creates better headlines and sells more papers than reporting on a well conceived, problem-solving plan".
Wein ended his letter, again quoting directly from Governor Pataki: "The recommendations of our bipartisan Task Force are a good start in ensuring that every New Yorker's right to vote is honored, respected and upheld. I am committed to working with the Senate and the Assembly to get legislation passed to implement the recommendations in this report so we can continue to build confidence in our elections".

On Sat April 20th, a group of volunteers hit the streets of Manhattan handing out free newspapers to passers by. Starting out in Harlem the volunteers encountered mixed views and opinion from pedestrians. After several rainstorms, the volunteers worked their way south to the Earth Day street festival where large crowds were gathered. The Frog crew passed out hundreds of free copies.
This first issue of Boiled Frog News carried an article about Louis Wein and the Draft Louis Wein For Governor Committee. One of the highlights of the day was when Louis Wein joined the Frog crew, helping to distribute the paper. Louis made the rounds, visiting the vendors, talking with park minstrels, chatting with the 6th precinct police, and running into old friends. He was greeted with handshakes and big smiles, as people learned of his planned run for Governor in NYS.
The last stop at the end of the day was Greenwich Village handing out papers and stopping to eat. The Frog crew talked about the days events and successes over some great pizza.
Thank you to the volunteers and to Louis Wein for helping the Boiled Frog News get on its legs.
What's the Boiled Frog News, you ask? Do they boil frogs?
Put a frog in hot water it fights to get out... Put a frog in cool water and heat it slowly, before the frog realizes it is in hot water, it's too late!
The name was chosen to illustrate incremental degradation of personal freedom. A law gets passed to "protect society from evil" and it is touted as being "for the good of society" so no one pays attention. The law does not work, so another law is passed, taking a little more personal freedom.
Then one day, we have no freedom left...
Boiled Frog News represents Second Amendment Views, Gun and Crime News from The Gun Owners Perspective.
The mission of the paper is two-fold. One, to improve awareness of the Second Amendment as a Civil Right and the relation it and the Bill of Rights play in our Civil Rights. Two, to improve participation in our government, encouraging citizens to vote and to communicate with elected officials on matters of importance regarding Civil Rights. The intention is to distribute free hardcopy forms of the paper in anti-gun regions of New York State. Education is the key to success. In order to make intelligent decisions one must be adequately informed on the subject.
