Applicant For Police Job ArrestedMarch 13, 2002 By DANIELA ALTIMARI, Courant Staff Writer WEST HARTFORD -- Gilbert MacConnell went into the police station for a job interview. He wound up getting arrested.MacConnell, who is 35 and lives in Kent, wanted to be a patrol officer. He already had passed written and oral exams as well as a physical agility test, and the next step was a face-to-face chat with police brass.During his Feb. 28 interview, police say, MacConnell bluntly stated that he owned a handgun, even though he lacked a permit to carry one. In fact, he told his interviewers, the weapon was in his vehicle parked just outside the police station. An officer went to check the car and, sure enough, found a .45-caliber handgun, Police Chief James Strillacci said.MacConnell went from prospective law enforcer to alleged law-breaker. He was charged with carrying a pistol without a permit and having a weapon in a motor vehicle."He talked himself not only out of a job, but into an arrest," Strillacci said.It wasn't the first time a job applicant wound up on the wrong side of the law. A few years back, a candidate for the post of assistant dog warden acknowledged during an interview that he had a cache of military explosives at his house.MacConnell, who could not be reached for comment, is scheduled to appear Thursday in Superior Court in Hartford. Before he was booked, police said, MacConnell had one question: "Does this mean I'm not getting the job?" http://www.ctnow.com/news/local/hc-whdbusted0313.artmar13.story
