It's Ten for Tubb in the NRA High Power Rifle Championships
G. David Tubb of Canadian, Texas, has won an unprecedented tenth NRA National High Power Rifle Championship. His victory came on August 8 when he finished the Crowell Trophy Match with a 199-point score that gave him a championship aggregate of 2365-121X.
Mitchell Maxberry, who has spent the past two days on Tubb's coattails, stayed there with a second place tally of 2352-94X. Third went to Marine CWO Dennis Demille, who led the field at the end of the first day, with 2345-93X.
Proud as he was of his victory -- he had earned it, coming from behind at the end of the first day and building a virtually insurmountable lead -- Tubb was not surprised. He had worked for his triumph. Asked what was next, he answered with one word. "Eleven," he said.
Tubb's aggregate will net him both the Mumma Trophy for overall National Championship, and the Wright Trophy for the Match Rifle Championship. Army SFC Kevin McMahon, the 2002 President's Rifle Match winner, is the Service Rifle Champion and DuPont Trophy winner at 2333-90X.
Tubb was not alone in his triumph as fellow competitors welcomed a number of familiar names and faces to the winners' circle. Robin Maly, from Lodi, Wisconsin, will take home trophies for her victories as high-scoring woman competitor, and as the junior category champion. Middle Tompkins is the 2002 Senior Champion. Adam Bester and James Fox, both of whom made names for them selves in National Trophy competition, are Collegiate Champion and Intermediate Junior Service Rifle Champion, respectively.
The final sub-aggregate in the NRA championship is for the Clarke Trophy -- a total of scores in the Appreciation Cup, Crescent Cup, and Cavalry Cup, and the Crowell Trophy Matches. Clarke Trophy honors went to the 2002 National Champion, G. David Tubb, whose 794-point victory in the Clarke capped his successful drive for the overall victory.
