CRIME: Guns save lives

Many people buy firearms for self-protection because they believe guns can help even the odds. Sure enough, a pistol allowed Steve D. Robey and his 16-year-old daughter to beat the odds against two armed robbers at a Fort Myers hotel.

Robey, 46, told authorities he had ordered room service at the hotel. When Robey answered a knock on his door, two intruders met him and demanded money. When Robey refused, they barged into the room, the Fort Myers News-Press reported.

One pointed a gun at Robey's head. The other dragged Robey's daughter to the bathroom. But Robey got a .45-caliber pistol from under his pillow and shot both men, killing one and critically injuring the other.

Robey suffered minor injuries, but his daughter was not hurt. Authorities said the men could be responsible for a string of robberies.

In most cases, it isn't wise to resist armed robbers. But there are times when victims have little choice.

Robey -- like a quarter-million other Florida residents -- has a state license to carry a concealed weapon. He likely saved the life of himself and his daughter by using his legal gun in a legal manner.

    Man Defends Home, Surprises Intruder
Police: Homeowner Kills Home Invasion Suspect

FORESTVILLE, Md. -- A Prince George's County man reportedly defended himself and his family last night after a home invader broke into their house. The incident happened around 11:45 p.m. when the homeowner thought he heard strange sounds coming from downstairs. Afraid that someone was trying to break in, he called police.

While waiting for police to respond, the homeowner came face to face in a struggle with the intruder. "The suspect apparently entered the home by breaking through the front door here and went upstairs, and that's where he encountered the homeowner, where the struggle began inside the home," said Cpl. Joe Merkel, Prince George's County police.

When police arrived, the homeowner thought the intruder was unconscious, but he was dead, authorities said. NEWS4's Brian Mooar reports the homeowner's actions were legally justified under the reasonable man standard. In fear of his own life, the homeowner took the life of another to protect his own, according to police.

Merkel said an autopsy might help them figure out what happened. "[The] body was removed from the scene here, and taken to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy. Once we get the results of that autopsy we'll get a clearer picture of what happened inside the home."

The intruder's motives remain unknown, and police will submit the case to the state's attorney as a matter of routine. Authorities are investigating the incident as a home invasion, not as a murder.

Police say the intruder was a stranger, and wonder why he would break into this home because it was clearly marked as having a security system. There have been problems with drugs and petty crime in the neighborhood, but no home invasions, according to neighbors.
