Invention Targets Gun Safety

A Scottsville family is using ingenuity to start a new business and to prevent children from being killed in accidental shootings.
" I was watching a program, saw how one child had accidently killed his friend, " says Liz Wurzer.
With four children and three guns in the house, Liz didn't want that to happen to her children.
She came up with what she calls the Lizzy Breach Blocker. A steel rod that fits into the barrell or breach of shotgun with a lock on the end. Liz says with the blocker in place, children can't load the gun.
"I thought it was too simple, got it together, I said, it's going to work, put bullet in there, you can't fire it," says Liz.
With some help from her husband Gary, Liz hopes to turn her invention into a full-time business. They're waiting for a patent. That could take about 13 months. In the meantime, the family will sell the blocker at the Monroe County Fair this week.

Praise While Spotlighting Opponents' Shortsightedness

CHICAGO, Aug. 30 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The following was released
today by the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA):
The ISRA is applauding Gov. George Ryan for signing Senate Bill
1936 into law.
Sponsored in the Senate by Sen. Peter Roskam (R-Glen Ellyn) and
in the House by Rep. John O. Jones (R-Mt. Vernon), the law will
make it easier for thousands of Illinois citizens to receive
life-saving gun safety training.
Previously, safety conscious citizens were required to possess
an Illinois Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card in order to
receive safety training. When combined with the red tape
associated with obtaining a FOID, the application fee deterred many
citizens from taking advantage of gun safety training
opportunities.
With the passage of SB1936, gun safety students will not have to
be in possession of a FOID card so long as their instructor holds
a valid FOID.
"This piece of progressive legislation will go a long way
towards cutting down the number of deaths and injuries suffered by
people who do not know how to approach an unattended firearm,"
commented ISRA president Richard Pearson. "With the new law,
people interested in learning about gun safety, but not interested
in buying a gun, will not be discouraged by the fees and red tape
associated with obtaining a FOID card."
SB1936 enjoyed wide bipartisan support - passing by an 85-24
margin in the House and 41-17 in the Senate. Those voting against
the measure are well known allies of Chicago Mayor Daley and
supporters of his plan to eliminate private firearm ownership in
Illinois.
Roll call votes from both chambers of the Illinois General
Assembly may be found on the ISRA web site at http://www.isra.org
"I find it unfortunate that some of our elected officials chose
to place the politics of gun control ahead of public safety, "
continued Pearson. "This bill should have passed unanimously in
both the Senate and the House. But there are those out there who
feel that it is more important to placate Mayor Daley than it is to
try to prevent innocent people from getting hurt."
The ISRA is the state's leading advocate of safe, lawful, and
responsible firearms ownership. For nearly a century, the ISRA has
represented the interests of over 1.5 million law-abiding Illinois
gun owners.
