NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Police dug up and destroyed armor-piercing ammunition, hand grenades, smoke bombs and two bags filled with chemicals after a man confessed to burying them. Michael Edward Smith, 31, was being held without bail Monday on a state charge of unlawful possession of a weapon. Smith was arrested Friday after someone told police that Smith was sitting in his car with a rifle pointed at the Sherith Israel Congregation synagogue. Smith left before officers arrived, but police were waiting for him at his apartment. Officers said that after they confronted him, Smith led them on a chase down Interstate 65 while holding a gun pointed at his own head. The chase ended after a few minutes in a parking lot outside a pharmacy where Smith's wife works, and police said they found an AR-15 assault rifle, a 9 mm semiautomatic pistol, ammunition and surgical gloves in Smith's car. While being interrogated, police said, Smith confessed to burying explosives and ammunition along the Duck River about 50 miles southwest of Nashville. "We dug up five different locations about 300 yards apart and found eight ammo cans filled with a lot of armor-piercing ammo, hand grenades, smoke bombs, dynamite fuses and flares," Maury County Sheriff Enoch George said. "There were also two duffel bags filled with chemicals, including aluminum sulfate and potassium nitrate." The weapons were destroyed Saturday by federal and local authorities. The FBI also was investigating Smith, spokesman Jon Stephens said. He did not provide details. Nashville police Lt. Steve Hewitt said Smith has a history of mental problems, but he wouldn't elaborate.
