Number of shots in a group?

How many shots does it take to make a group?

I've seen writers and manufacturers use different numbers...

3 shot groups for hunting rifles?

5 shot groups for handgun and target shooting?

10 shot groups for ammo evaluation?

If an auto or rifle I'll use 5. If a revolver I'll use whatever the cylinder holds. Once had a S&W 629 that threw one round every time. Narrowed it down to a bad chamber that probably wasn't drilled right.

I agree with 5 for a rifle.I think that gives you a good idea of the accuracy of both the gun and the load you are using in it.

Here's the deal, if you hit what your aiming at when the shot is taken, the firearm is sighted in. (For me, my target is Earth.)

In a soon to be released book about "Snipers" including their rifles, fifteen, five shot groups are required to get a average group measurement. Of course these guys figure my targets rotation in their equation for long shots....

Five is the number I hear most often, though in the pre hi-cap days I think some folks used to just empty a cylinder or magazine, which would have usually made six. It may take emptying the gun to determine for sure whether there will be a flier in the bunch. Although the flier should be the first round out of the magazine, if any, I believe.

For a hunting rifle (after sighting in) shoot 5 ONE-shot groups. That is set up 5 targets, take one shot at one target, clean the rifle and let it cool completely then shoot the next target. Repeat for a total of 5 targets. Measure each shot in relation to your aiming point and that is your group.

For load and/or rifle/semi-auto pistol evaluation, use 5, 5-shot groups. The mean spread is a reasonable projection for the load or rifle/semi.

For revolvers, set up to measure 2 different types of groups. One type is to shoot all chambers at one target (repeat 5 times) for a measure of the overall performance. The other type is chamber-by-chamber grouping. Mark each chamber and shoot one target 5 times from the same chamber. Repeat on a fresh target for each chamber. Gives you an amazing amount of info on how your revolver is functioning

While five seems to be the norm, I prefer to shoot three, five shot groups in rifle and average the results. Wheelgun - however many chambers there are.

I use 5 shots and drop the flyer.
