PM 'playing politics' with gun laws: gold medal shooter
Australian Olympic gold medal shooter and one-time Liberal candidate for the federal seat of Ballarat, Russell Mark, says the Prime Minister is playing politics with uniform national gun laws.
Earlier this week John Howard said he was prepared to tighten national gun laws.
Mr Mark has told ABC television's Insiders program the Prime Minister risked reigniting the gun debate.
"He went as far as to call all firearms weapons," Mr Mark said.
"I struggle with that term, anything is regarded as a weapon in my eyes it's a matter of how you use it.
"I can only think Mr Howard's comments this week regarding the gun legislation could possibly be related to a forthcoming state election http://www.abc.net.au/news/politics/2002/04/item20020421112808_1.htm
"If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of a constitutional privilege." - Arkansas Supreme Court, 1878
