U.S. House Approves Restricted Access To Gun Permit Records
4/16/2002
The U.S. House of Representatives approved a bill that would make it harder for the public to view records on people holding concealed weapons permits, the Associated Press reported April 10.
In reversing an earlier decision, the House voted 38-24 to send the measure to the U.S. Senate for consideration.
Under the bill, sponsored by Rep. Mark Cloer (R-Colorado Springs), local sheriffs and chiefs of police would be given discretion in deciding whether to release identifying information about concealed weapons permit holders.
If law enforcement officials decide to release the information, the bill would require them to inform each affected permit holder by mail and wait 10 days before releasing the data.
Rep. Dan Grossman (D-Denver) said success of the measure in the Democrat-controlled Senate is unlikely. http://www.jointogether.org/gv/news/summaries/reader/0,2061,550115,00.html
"If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of a constitutional privilege." - Arkansas Supreme Court, 1878
