NRA Convention Opens
By Jim Burns, CNSNews
Friday, Apr. 26, 2002
The National Rifle Association, which bills itself as the nation's oldest civil right organization, is holding its 131st annual convention in Reno, Nev., this weekend, and for the first time in more than ten years, the keynote speaker is a Democrat.
Thousands of delegates began descending upon Reno on Thursday. Several hotels were overwhelmed with room requests from guests who made reservations early and from the many who made them at the last minute.
A sign with a bald eagle and the words "I'll Fight For Freedom" adorned the convention walls as delegates entered the convention center. A huge sign posted at the Reno-Tahoe airport exits said, "Welcome National Rifle Association."
Some of this year's seminars on firearms and firearm-related issues will be held at the convention center while some others will take place at the Reno Hilton, a short distance across town.
A firearms law seminar is set for Friday morning at the Hilton. NRA executive director Wayne LaPierre will formally open the convention on Friday afternoon.
NRA president and longtime actor and gun supporter Charlton Heston is expected to be on hand, too.
Sen. Zell Miller (D-Ga.) will be the keynote speaker at this year's NRA banquet on Saturday night. Miller supports gun rights, as do a number of other Democrats, mostly from the south and west.
Miller has written, "For a politician in the South, gun control is not just about guns. Gun control - along with a whole bunch of other issues - is about values."
Country Music's "multi-entertainer of the year" Vince Gill will entertain the delegates during Saturday night's banquet.
The convention will adjourn on Sunday afternoon. But the NRA Board of Directors will stay on for a meeting on Monday morning to set strategy on gun issues for the next year. http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2002/4/26/63020.shtml
