Guns can save lives

Guns can save lives As a survivor of violent domestic abuse, I find it both unconscionable and underhanded to exploit battered women to advance gun control. 04/06/02In every case cited ("State fails to disarm domestic abusers," March 24), there is a possibility that, had the woman been trained to use a gun and armed, she would have survived. Every year, people in the United States use guns for self-defense an estimated 2.5 million times. From Our Advertiser It is clear from the cases cited that restraining orders are no help when dealing with a determined domestic attacker. Somehow, that piece of paper doesn't conjure fear in the mind of an obsessed stalker. There is one thing though, that stops a would-be killer in his tracks: the would-be victim, accurately aiming the gun that she has been trained to use in the defense of her life. Guns do not kill battered women -- but they may very well save their lives.
