Costs May Force Cities to Drop Gun Lawsuits4/4/2002 Faced with high litigation costs, other cities may follow in the footsteps of Boston, Mass., and drop their lawsuits again gunmakers, Reuters reported March 28.Boston's Public Health Commission decided to drop its gun lawsuit after spending "hundreds of thousands of dollars" on the litigation. Other municipalities could follow Boston's lead, especially those faced with budget shortfalls."It's not surprising the city of Boston would drop its lawsuit when it's feeling an economic crunch," said Jack Levin, director of The Brudnick Center on Violence at Northeastern University. "It probably had a weak case to begin with. We're probably going to see a domino effect by other cities that imitate Boston's response."Dennis Henigan, legal director for the Washington, D.C.-based Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, disagreed with Levin's assessment."The gun industry is putting enormous resources in these cases and doing its best to drive up the costs of litigation in other cities," said Henigan. But, he added, "I see no reason why the other cities aren't prepared to litigate these cases to their conclusion." http://www.jointogether.org/gv/news/summaries/reader/0,2061,549790,00.html
