Relax, Gun Enthusiasts, You're OK
S.C. Attorney General Charlie Condon swooped into Myrtle Beach last weekend to reassure local Friends of the National Rifle Association that he will repel all threats to their way of life. To hear him tell it, you'd think that Sarah Brady is locked and loaded to blast S.C. residents' home-defense handguns and deer rifles out of their cold, dead hands.
Gun enthusiasts should relax. If ever there was a place where they can feel secure in their Second Amendment rights, it's South Carolina - especially the Independent Republic of Horry. The gun-control philosophy has nary a toehold here.
Condon, of course, is running for governor. But folks who base their votes on gun issues need not fear the other candidates for the state's top job. None of the other Republican candidates or Democratic Gov. Jim Hodges advocates gun control.
