Home Invader Stopped Cold Email story to a friend Plenty of raw emotion Friday night after a bizarre home invasion. It happened about seven o'clock on Menefee Road not far from the East Limestone High School.Homeowner Travis Harbin shot the man trying to break into his house with a sledgehammer. Harbin wasn't hurt... but he is on crutches and has been for some time. According to the Limestone County Sheriff's Department, the suspect didn't fare as well. He was airlifted to Huntsville Hospital after being shot in the groin. Limestone County investigators are still trying to hash-out the details of this case... Including the motive behind the break-in.Family members of both men arrived on scene quickly, each of them trying to figure out exactly what happened. The Harbin family tells Newschannel 19 the two men knew each other... but wouldn't elaborate on their relationship. At this point, the Limestone County Sheriff's Department has not charged homeowner Travis Harbin with a crime. Meanwhile no word yet, on the condition of the suspect... who most likely will face criminal charges. http://www.whnt19.com/global/Frameset.asp?P=/Global/story.asp?S=706193
Surviving Blockbuster Robbery Suspect Charged With Murder Declaring him criminally responsible for the shooting death of his accomplice, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office has charged the surviving suspect with murder in Monday night's botched Blockbuster robbery. Sheriff's investigators formally charged 18-year-old Darius Bennett with murder and being a principal to attempted armed robbery, serving him with the arrest papers in his hospital bed at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach. Bennett is recovering from a gunshot wound to the chest he sustained when the father of a Blockbuster employee opened fire on the suspects to foil their robbery attempt. The other suspect, 19-year-old James Wince, died from gunshots to the chest and neck. Both suspects are from Deltona. Both wearing masks, the suspects entered the Blockbuster Video Store on Enterprise Road in Orange City at about 11:45 p.m. Monday night. Witnesses said Wince was armed with a rifle and pointed it at one employee as well as another employee's father, 50-year-old Robert Shockey. Shockey had arrived at the store to pick up his son and was armed with a .45-caliber handgun. Shockey, who has a concealed weapons permit from the state to carry the gun, fired first at Wince. When Wince fell to the ground and dropped his rifle, Shockey fired at Bennett as he made a move to pick up the rifle. http://580wdbo.com/news/020319blockbuster3.html

Riviera Beach officer shot to death after attacking ex-wife's boyfriendBy Peter Franceschina Sun-Sentinel Posted March 18 2002 An off-duty Riviera Beach police officer was shot to death early Sunday morning after breaking into an apartment belonging to his estranged wife's boyfriend, sheriff's officials said.Robert C. Beck Jr., 34, died at the scene of the shooting at the Banyan Club Apartments near Gun Club and Haverhill roads in suburban West Palm Beach, sheriff's spokesman Paul Miller said. Beck was shot after breaking a window at the apartment and climb-ing into a bedroom, apparently armed with his service weapon, Miller said. Johnnie Rollins, who investigators said is Josette Beck's boyfriend, appeared to have fired the shots in self-defense, Miller said.Beck was charged Oct. 16 with aggravated battery on his pregnant 34-year-old wife, which led to divorce proceedings, according to Beck's arrest report. The status of that domestic violence case couldn't be determined Sunday. When sheriff's investigators were called to Rollins' apartment shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday, it was the second time in a week. Deputies were also called to the apartment on Wednesday but said Beck was gone when they arrived.Deputies were called Saturday after a report that Beck was pounding on windows and doors and threatening Rollins. Beck left before deputies arrived, and Josette Beck was taken back to her home in the 4800 block of Pine Cone Lane in suburban West Palm Beach.Reached a short time later on his cellular phone by a deputy, Robert Beck denied being at the apartment. Deputies then contacted Riviera Beach police, who ordered Beck to report to the station on Monday.Instead, he went to his wife's home, got inside, and threatened his wife and 2-month-old child with his department-issued gun, sheriff's investigators said.He again left before deputies arrived. A Riviera Beach police sergeant called Beck's cell phone twice and ordered him to report to the police station immediately."[Josette Beck] was scared, so she went back to [Rollins' apartment] with the four children," Miller said.Fearing the trouble wasn't over, Rollins called his mother to pick up the youngest child, a 2-month-old boy. Josette Beck stayed at the apartment with the three other children, all girls ranging in age from 7 to 12.At 2:40 a.m., Rollins told deputies he heard a window break and saw someone jump inside the apartment. Rollins, 22, a sheet metal worker, fired several shots from a .22-caliber semi-automatic rifle at Beck, striking him several times, Miller said. A loaded .40-caliber Glock handgun with a round in the chamber - thought to be Beck's service weapon - was found near his body. The Palm Beach County State Attorney's Office will review the shooting to determine whether it was self-defense. Rollins was not in custody or facing any charges Sunday.Sgt. Pat Galligan, spokesman for Riviera Beach police, said Sunday he didn't know whether Beck had faced any disciplinary action for the October domestic violence arrest. The Becks were set to have their divorce finalized on March 28, Miller said. Robert Beck, who most recently was a K-9 officer, had been with the department about three years, Miller said.Peter Franceschina can be reached at pfranceschina@sun-sentinel.com or 561-832-2894. Man killed after Mounds argument, authorities say2002-03-18By The Associated PressMOUNDS, Okla. - A shooting victim has died after mechanical problems with a medical helicopter kept him from arriving at a hospital, authorities said. Creek County deputies identified the victim as Robert Alvarado, 20, and believe he is from Tulsa or Okmulgee. Chris Wilson, 22, of Mounds shot Alvarado in self-defense, officers said. The argument began over borrowed wheel rims and ended Saturday when Alvarado drove to Wilson's home and approached the house with a shotgun, said Creek County sheriff's detective Jolen Boyd. Wilson shot Alvarado after Alvarado pointed the weapon at him, Boyd said. Wilson and neighbors gave first aid to Alvarado until emergency workers arrived. A helicopter came from Tulsa to take Alvarado to a hospital, but transmission problems kept it from taking off. Alvarado likely would not have lived long enough to get to the hospital anyway, Boyd said. The case will be presented to the district attorney's office for consideration, Boyd said. http://www.newsok.com/cgi-bin/show_article?ID=836626
