Lawsuit Filed to Keep West Virginia Sportsmen from Hunting on Sunday- (03/19)West Virginia In 2001, West Virginia joined ranks with 40 other states when its legislature approved a measure to permit Sunday hunting. Now, the law is under fire. The West Virginia Farm Bureau has asked a court to overturn the law. It claims that legislators were misled by last year's bill. Those who did not read the bill closely were under the impression that an amendment to the bill would require counties to individually approve Sunday hunting by referendum. In fact, the amendment permits Sunday hunting unless a county prohibits it through a countywide vote. Sportsmen should be aware that 32 counties in the state have placed the issue on the May statewide primary ballot. Counties Where Sunday Hunting Will Be Determined Through Referendum: Barbor, Berkeley, Calhoun, Doddridge, Fayette, Gilmer, Grant, Greenbrier, Hampshire, Harrison, Lewis, Marion, Mason, Mercer, Mineral, Monongalia, Monroe, Morgan, Nicholas, Pendleton, Pleasants, Pocahontas, Preston, Randolph, Ritchie, Roane, Summers, Tucker, Tyler, Upshur, Wirt and Wood. Take action! Sportsmen in the listed counties should inform voters that Sunday hunting restrictions have proven to be unnecessary red tape that has hurt hunter participation and infringes upon landowner rights. Only sportsmen, working together to spread this message, can preserve your ability to hunt on Sunday. Vote "YES" to keep Sunday hunting in your county.
