Gun Control Lobbying Intensifies From Roll Call, March 25, 2002 Gun Control Lobbying Intensifies. While gun control is barely on the Congressional legislative radar screen, the anti-gun Violence Policy Center is beefing up just in case the issue suddenly emerges in this election year. VPC executives Josh Sugarman, Kristen Rand and Joe Sudbay have set up a new 501(c)(4) nonprofit, known as the Violence Prevention Campaign, to enable them to lobby against firearms more effectively and engage in more partisan activity. The original group has 501(c)(3) status, which limits its lobbying activity, while the new anti-gun organization can be more aggressive in its advocacy. VPC is throwing a bash Tuesday at the group's headquarters to celebrate the paperback publication of Sugarman's book, "Every Handgun is Aimed at You: The Case for Banning Handguns." The publication of the book also coincides with the launching of a Web site, www.banhandgunsnow.org. The new group has already earned the scorn of pro-gun folks at KeepAndBearArms.com, which recently charged that the VPC's new entity will now take its "extremist goals to the partisan arena." "Watch for gun ban efforts in the guise of 'product safety' and 'anti-terrorism,' two hallmarks of VPC's strategy," wrote Sean Oberle of the pro-gun site. http://www.calnra.org/rollcall.html
