Gun Control Bill
Kenny Goldberg
KPBS, SAN DIEGO
(2003-08-25) Gun control advocates are urging California state lawmakers to approve a bill they say could help prevent accidental shootings. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.
The measure would require new handguns models to have a clear indicator, that would show whether or not the weapon was loaded. It would also require guns to have a safety device that prevented them from firing when the magazine is removed.
Luis Tolley is with the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. We're not banning any weapons that are already for sale in California. This bill simply says if you're going to introduce a new model into California, if you're gonna design a new gun, when you design that new gun you need to put in these new safety features as well.
Critics argue such safety measures would put gun owners at a disadvantage if they needed to use their weapon for self-defense. Supporters maintain the bill would cut down on unintentional shootings. The measure is headed for the Assembly floor. It's already cleared the Senate.
