ED GRISAMOREThe lady bought a gunThe lady bought a gun.She keeps it within arm's reach in her bedroom, where her fingers can find it in the dark. She lives alone. She sleeps on a ledge of fear. That is why the lady bought a gun.Her life has been altered by a frightening night two months ago. She woke up at midnight to the sound of her burglar alarm. Someone had broken into her house through the basement door. She later discovered the prowler also had picked the lock on her patio door. She never saw the nameless, faceless intruder. She only knows he left without getting what he came to get. She has no guarantees he will not return under the veil of darkness to steal from her, harm her or rape her.So the lady bought a black .38 revolver. She loaded a bullet in each of the five chambers. Folks suggested she keep it under the mattress, but she wanted to be ready with a quick draw. She has not fired a gun since she was a young girl. Her brother let her shoot his rifle, taking target practice at glass bottles on a fence post. She is not your typical gun owner. She is a not a pistol-packin' mama. She is not a violent or vindictive person. She has never killed anything bigger than a mosquito. She is a petite woman who wears her gray hair pulled in a bun. She is always immaculately dressed, even when she works in the yard. Her husband died 11 years ago. She has no children. She has learned to cope with her loneliness and safeguard herself against predators. She has deadbolts on her doors, a bank of security lights across the back of her house and the finest security system money can buy. She carries a cell phone when she leaves home.Years ago, she entertained thoughts of buying a pistol for protection when she was leaving before daylight and returning after dark. Her husband opposed the idea."You don't bluff with a gun," he told her. If you start waving a gun, you had better be prepared to shoot it. If the perpetrator is unarmed, he might take it from you and shoot you with your own weapon. Two sleepless weeks after the break-in, she went to a gun store in downtown Macon. The lady bought a gun.She expected the gun shop to be full of men with tobacco juice dripping down their chins. She was surprised at their sophistication. She also was surprised to find so many older single women own guns.A friend dropped by to show her how to handle the gun and to respect it. She was comforted by the sudden peace that swept over her.Still, she trembles when she talks about the new experience. She said she wants to stay in her home and not retreat to a retirement community."I'm not going to give up on living just because my husband's gone," she said.I asked her if she could shoot someone, even kill them."He (the intruder) may not come again," she said. "But I'm not going to sit here waiting to prove it. Yes, I would shoot and kill someone to protect myself."The lady bought a gun. She's not afraid to use it. http://www.macon.com/mld/telegraph/2550560.htm
