NJIT, Picatinny Arsenal form partnership that may save ''smart gun'' By Associated Press, 1/9/2002 08:16 NEWARK, N.J. (AP) The New Jersey Institute of Technology and the Picatinny Arsenal will form a partnership that could save the school's ''smart gun'' from the scrap heap. The pair have agreed to cooperate on a wide range of homeland defense and environmental projects through a five-year ''memorandum of understanding'' that will be formalized on Thursday. The agreement is expected to promote collaboration on new sensors for finding land mines and hidden explosives, The Star-Ledger of Newark reported in Thursday's editions. Other possibilities include lighter, tougher tank armors that camouflage themselves with special coatings, and environmentally friendly manufacturing and disposal methods for ammunition. NJIT Vice President Donald Sebastian said the partnership could save a ''smart gun'' program started by the school in 1999. Researchers are working to create a gun that will fire only if they ''recognize'' particular users. http://www.boston.com/dailynews/009/region/NJIT_Picatinny_Arsenal_form_pa:.shtml
