GLENDALEto consider restricting gun sales near schools. By Tim Willert CITY HALL -- The city has broad legal authority to regulate the sales of firearms, which could open the door for the City Council to limit gun sales to commercial zones and restrict them within a certain distance of all schools. The City Council on Tuesday will consider such legislation and an ordinance that would prohibit anyone younger than 18 from entering or remaining inside a gun store.Councilman Rafi Manoukain raised the issue in October and asked City Atty. Scott Howard to research the legality of of regulating gun sales near schools. Manoukian, who could not be reached for comment Friday, has said he would like to see gun sales restricted within 1,000 feet of schools, and gun shows like the ones at Glendale Civic Auditorium eliminated. The shows are across the street from Glendale Community College."I believe it's important for the council to take a stand," Manoukian said recently. "I wouldn't want [guns or gun shows] around schools where my children go and I'm sure other parents wouldn't want them around their children."Councilman Bob Yousefian sees the issue differently."I really don't see it to be something that is of urgent need at this time," Yousefian said Friday. "If we're really worried about guns, we need to work on federal and state legislation."IN OTHER ACTIONThe Glendale City Council will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the council chambers at 613 E. Broadway. The Glendale Housing Authority will meet at 2:30 p.m. and the Redevelopment Agency will meet at 3:30 p.m. The meetings will be televised live on Charter Communications Channel 6. http://www.latimes.com/tcn/glendale/news/la-gn0020968jan14.story
