Paxinos picked for gun program Gazette Staff Yellowstone County Attorney Dennis Paxinos is among county prosecutors who have been selected to participate in the Project Safe Neighborhood, a national training program designed to reduce gun-related crimes at the local level. Project Safe Neighborhood, developed by the Bush administration, aims to put local prosecutors into partnerships with U.S. attorney's offices and agencies to identify and reduce violent gun crime in local communities, Paxinos said Monday. Under federal law, convicted felons possessing a firearm are subject to an automatic five-year prison term, yet many of them aren't prosecuted for the gun charges, Paxinos said. He hopes that Project Safe Neighborhood will lead to more convictions of firearms violators, especially felons who possess firearms while selling drugs. "I want to have these guys hit harder where they're selling their wares on the street," Paxinos said. Paxinos said Project Safe Neighborhood fits into Bush's policy of trying to enforce existing gun laws rather than trying to enact new ones. The training session will be conducted at the National Advocacy Center on the University of South Carolina Campus in Columbus, S.C., Wednesday through Friday. U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft will speak. Each year the National Advocacy Center trains more than 10,000 federal, state and local prosecutors in advocacy skills and management of legal operations. http://www.billingsgazette.com/index.php?section=local&display=content/local/paxinos.inc
