Lawmakers Say Utah Universities Can't Ban Guns1/17/2002 Email Print Subscribe The Utah legislature says that policies set by colleges and universities to keep firearms off their campuses are illegal, the Ogden, Utah Standard-Examiner reported Jan. 15.The Legislature's Administrative Rules Committee stated that Utah's colleges and universities that currently ban concealed-carry permitholders from having guns on campus do not have the statutory authority to enforce these policies. But Mitch Velos, a lawyer who represents gun owners in firearms-rights issues, said the committee was wrong, noting that under existing state law it is illegal to take weapons into schools or onto school property. The state's definition of schools includes universities, colleges and technical colleges, said Velos. On Jan. 13, the Deseret News reported that a survey of Utah residents found that most believe public colleges and universities should have the authority to ban concealed weapons.Conducted in December by Dan Jones & Associates for Deseret News/KSL-TV, the survey found that 64 percent of Utahns said banning guns from college campus areas, including dormitories, should be within the right of college and university authorities. In addition, 65 percent said guns, even those legally permitted, should not be allowed in licensed day-care centers. The poll also found that 44 percent believe natural resource officials definitely or probably should be able to ban guns from state parks, but 54 percent said they definitely or probably should not have that authority. http://www.jointogether.org/gv/news/summaries/reader/0,2061,547724,00.html
