Boxcar of munitions sent to peanut plant2002-01-19The Associated PressMcALESTER -- A boxcar loaded with military munitions bound for the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant wound up instead at a peanut plant in Texas. "Apparently it was never unloaded," said Tom Steffen, a spokesman for Union Pacific. "We now have possession of it and have secured the car." Steffen said the boxcar left Leland, N.C., for Savanna, OK, on Oct. 29. From there, it was supposed to go to the nearby ammunition plant. Instead, it was somehow marked as unloaded and sent Jan. 8 to the Golden Peanut plant in Comyn, Texas. The car contained laser-guided munitions, Steffen said. "It was supposed to be an empty car," he said. "There were no seals on the car when it was discovered." Mark Hughes, a spokesman for the plant, said the plant has no record of the boxcar. "As far as we can tell, we never received this boxcar," he said. "We can't even confirm the car ever came to Savanna." The McAlester Army Ammunition Plant has built explosives for nearly 60 years, beginning in World War II. Bombs made at the plant are being used in Operation Enduring Freedom, the nation's war against terrorism. The plant is the military's largest explosive storage facility and southeastern Oklahoma's largest employer with a $91 million impact, officials said. It employs about 900 people. http://www.newsok.com/cgi-bin/show_article?ID=811580
