Loophole in Gun Laws Gun Control: Gun Foes Use Terror Issue in a Push for Stricter Laws (November 13, 2001) o the Editor:"Gun Foes Use Terror Issue in a Push for Stricter Laws" (news article, Nov. 13) reports that people with links to terrorist groups were able to buy firearms at gun shows, where unlicensed sellers in 32 states are not required to conduct criminal background checks. It is ludicrous to suggest, as James Baker of the National Rifle Association does, that "the system works" because the suspects were arrested through use of surveillance and informants. We were fortunate that there were other reasons to suspect them, or they would not have been caught.Such a loophole is unconscionable, particularly when we are fighting a war on terrorism.
