ISRA Advises Illinois House Delegation To Ignore Brady Campaign Call For National Gun Registration To: State Desk Contact: Richard Pearson of the Illinois State Rifle Association, 815-635-3198; Web site: http://www.isra.org CHICAGO, Nov. 16 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA) is advising the Illinois delegation to the U.S. House to ignore a renewed call for national registration of privately owned firearms. The ISRA's action comes in response to a Nov. 15 press conference held by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. During that Washington press conference, representatives of the gun control industry, including the Brady Campaign, urged implementation of a national gun registration scheme as a means to combat terrorism. The Brady Campaign proposal is merely another instance of the gun control movement exploiting tragedy in hopes of scoring a victory for their unpopular cause. Any link between the events of September 11 and the lack of a national gun registry is tenuous, at best. The true purpose of gun registration is not to prevent terrorism, or even street crime. Rather, the aim of gun registration is to destroy our nation's heritage of lawful firearm ownership through a campaign of government intrusion, mountains of red tape, and punitive taxation of gun owners. "We've heard the Bradys sing this song before," said ISRA president Richard Pearson. "Gun registration has been pitched as a cure for everything from animal abuse to domestic violence to events such as the Columbine incident. Now, the gun control movement would have us believe that gun registration would have prevented the September 11th tragedy. The truth of the matter is that gun registration has one purpose and one purpose only. That being to lay the groundwork for the government to forcibly confiscate privately owned guns. Gun registration has no other practical purpose. We know it, and the Bradys know it too." "Over the next several days, phones in congressional offices will be pretty busy," continued Pearson. "U.S. House members will be hearing the message that so-called antiterrorism bills should target terrorists, not hunters and sportsmen. The message will be loud and clear -- gun registration is not acceptable in a free and open America."
The ISRA is the state's leading advocate of safe, lawful and responsible firearm ownership. For nearly a century, the ISRA has represented the interests of over 1.5 million law abiding Illinois firearm owners. http://www.usnewswire.com/topnews/Current_Releases/1116-102.html
