Law Enforcement, Religious and Gun Safety Groups to Hold News Conference Tomorrow on Homeland Security To: Assignment Desk, Daybook Editor Contact: Brendan Daly of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, 202-898-0792 Web site: http://www.bradycampaign.org News Advisory: Leaders of national law enforcement, religious and gun safety organizations will hold a news conference tomorrow at the National Press Club to call for strengthening our nation's gun laws as vital to any plan to increase our Homeland Security. As detailed in an article in The New York Times yesterday, several people with links to terrorist groups were able to buy firearms at gun shows, where unlicensed sellers are not required to conduct criminal background checks. The suspects were later arrested through the use of surveillance and informants. "As our nation struggles to fight a broad war against terrorism, it is unconscionable that loopholes in our laws allow terrorists to buy firearms easily in the United States," said Michael Barnes, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. "As we strive to increase security in our homeland, we should take a simple step that will solve this problem -- requiring a criminal background check every time a firearm is sold."
