John Thomas Maurer Jr., 1629 Avondale Drive, was trying to leave Virginia Delaney's house at 1624 Avondale Drive through a laundry room window when she stopped him. Police said Delaney told them she returned home from a store and noticed a fan in her bedroom turned around as well as a video cassette recorder halfway removed from an entertainment center. Delaney then grabbed a shotgun, police said, and searched her house. When Delaney found Maurer in the laundry room, she escorted him back to her bedroom and made him empty his pockets. He turned over a cell phone, a pack of cigarettes and four pennies, police said. Maurer was then allowed to leave, and he walked across the street to his home, police said. Wife shoots LaCenter man in self-defense, detectives say 12/04/01JOHN PAINTER JR. VANCOUVER -- A LaCenter-area man was shot to death Sunday night by his wife after he broke down a bedroom door in an attempt to continue beating her, Clark County sheriff's detectives said. From Our Advertiser Craig R. Swenson, 59, died at the scene from a gunshot to his chest, Detective Pat St. John said Monday. He said Swenson had physically assaulted his wife, Cheryl, 55, and she had run into the master bedroom of their home in the 1400 block of Northeast 389th Street and locked the door. Swenson broke down the door and was advancing on his wife, threatening to continue the beating, when she fired a shot from a .357-caliber Magnum handgun, St. John said. The violent death is the second involving family members in Clark County in the past week. On Nov. 27, Omar H. Malone, 19, was shot dead in his family's Lakeshore-area home. Sheriff's investigators said it appeared he attacked his sleeping father with a shovel. During the ensuing fight between the two, the younger Malone was shot once in the head, officials said. Burl Malone suffered head and lung injuries. In Sunday's shooting, sheriff's deputies and LaCenter and Ridgefield police arrived at the Swenson home northeast of LaCenter at 6:15 p.m., investigators said. The couple moved to the area about two years ago from the Hillsboro area. Cheryl Swenson told authorities her husband "had a history of beating her," St. John said. "She said that she wouldn't call 9-1-1, but would get away from him and stay away until he cooled down." He said they had been married 20 years. Authorities say the situation appears to be a case of self-defense. St. John said no arrest is anticipated. However, after the investigation is complete, the file will be sent to the Clark County Prosecutor's Office for review. http://www.oregonlive.com/metronorth/oregonian/index.ssf?/xml/story.ssf/html_standard.xsl?/base/news/100747056320908148.xml
Home's Occupant Shoots Intruder Monday, December 3, 2001 A Salt Lake City man shot and seriously wounded a teenage boy who was allegedly burglarizing his home Sunday afternoon. The unidentified 16-year-old was taken to LDS Hospital after the shooting and was in critical condition Sunday evening, Salt Lake police Lt. Jack Rickards said. At about 4:30 p.m., the 16-year-old allegedly entered the home at 1521 S. West Temple St. A 47-year-old homeowner, armed with a handgun, confronted the burglar and told him not to move. When the juvenile continued to move, the man fired several shots. Two bullets struck the teen in the back, Rickards said. The teen then fled and was found collapsed on the porch at a home around the corner. Rickards said the homeowner believed he was about to be robbed after receiving a hang-up call. The man sent his six daughters to hide in the basement. The family had been the victim of two earlier robberies. During one of those robberies, a handgun was taken, Rickards said. Salt Lake County prosecutors will determine if the shooting was justified and whether the teen should be charged with burglary. -- Jacob Santini http://www.sltrib.com/12032001/utah/154451.htm
