State Fares Poorly in Gun StudyMaryland children die from handguns -- and kill others with them -- more often than children in most states, according to a study released yesterday by a group trying to reduce weapons violence. The study conducted by the Violence Policy Center, a Washington-based group, said 182 children in Maryland, or about three in 100,000, were killed with handguns from 1995 to 1999, the highest rate of any state the study examined. Maryland children also committed slayings with a handgun at a higher rate than any state surveyed, according to the study.Virginia, a state with gun control laws that are far less sweeping than Maryland's, ranked 19th in the number of children who died from handgun violence. It was 15th in the number of children who used a handgun in a killing. The study was based on unpublished FBI statistics and did not include data from 13 states or the District.Karen Brock, who wrote the study, said more regulation of handguns is needed, but a National Rifle Association official said the study offered no evidence about the effectiveness of restrictive handgun laws. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A31555-2001Nov28.html
