NRA Vows to Take Shays-Meehan to Supreme CourtNational Rifle Association spokesman Wayne LaPierre vowed Wednesday that his organization will fight the Shays-Meehan campaign finance reform bill, currently sailing through the House, all the way to the highest court in the land."We're announcing today that the National Rifle Association is going to fund this suit all the way to the Supreme Court for all people's free speech in the United States," LaPierre told nationally syndicated radio host Sean Hannity. The NRA spokesman contended that under the Shays-Meehan bill, Americans will have their right to free speech curtailed. Meanwhile he argued, "the big media companies - AOL/Time Warner; Viacom, which owns CBS; General Electric, which owns NBC; and their billions of dollars - they'll be able to say whatever they want."LaPierre warned that politicians favored by the press would get a big boost, with the playing field tilted heavily in the big media's favor. "If you own a big media company and you have a pet politician or a pet cause, you can spend millions of dollars" for promotion, he told Hannity."Let me give you an example," he continued. "Viacom, which owns CBS also owns Simon and Schuster. Who just paid Hillary Clinton $8 million for her book? Simon and Schuster!" http://www.newsmax.com/showinsidecover.shtml?a=2002/2/13/163400
