ISRA: Put Gun Safety Under The Tree This Christmas To: State Desk Contact: Richard Pearson of the Illinois State Rifle Association, 815-635-3198; Web Site: http://www.isra.org CHICAGO, Dec. 18 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The following was released today by the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA): In what is a uniquely American tradition, thousands of individuals will receive the gift of a fine firearm this holiday season. For some, their shiny new gun will serve as an introduction to the shooting sports while, for others, a valued addition to an existing collection. Whatever the case, the ISRA is urging both gift givers and recipients alike to include gun safety in their holiday plans. Although the shooting sports enjoy a remarkably low accident rate, novice and experienced shooters alike can benefit from firearm safety training. Many commercial ranges, gun clubs, state departments of natural resources and, in some cases, local police departments offer classes in gun safety. In most cases tuition is nominal and courses are taught by certified firearm safety instructors. Some training facilities even offer gift certificates that make great stocking-stuffers. "We're encouraging all firearm owners to brush up on their safety skills," said ISRA president Richard Pearson. "No matter how long you've been shooting, there is always something new you can learn from a qualified instructor. If you're giving someone a gun as a gift this holiday season, give him or her a gift certificate for some training. And, while you're at it, sign yourself up for a safety class too. You can never know too much about preventing a firearm related accident." _ _ _ The ISRA is the state's leading advocate of safe, lawful, and responsible firearms ownership. For nearly a century, the ISRA has represented the interests of over 1.5 million law-abiding Illinois firearm owners.
