Extremists exploiting tragedy2001-12-18TO THE EDITOR: The gun ban extremists are at again, this time shamelessly exploiting the tragedies of Sept. 11 in an effort to force their agenda on an unwilling public. Once again their target is Attorney General John Ashcroft. Handgun Control Inc. has attacked Ashcroft for refusing to release National Instant Check System (NICS) records to authorities for the alleged purpose of "homeland security." The NICS system was put in place by the 1993 Brady Act and is designed to provide instant background checks on gun purchasers. The law specifically forbids using records on firearm purchasers who pass the NICS check for anything other than auditing the system. Sarah Brady is calling for Ashcroft to break the law by disregarding a key provision of legislation that bears her name. Not to be outdone, Sens. John McCain and Joe Lieberman plan to introduce a bill in January that would effectively shut down gun shows due to what they call a gun show "loophole." No such loophole exists. Federal firearms licensees who sell firearms at gun shows must do the NICS check the same as other licensees. Private individuals who purchase booth space to sell or trade their own guns do not. Neither do people who sell guns through classified ads or who transfer gun ownership to a friend or family member. These thinly veiled efforts to further disarm the public are a slap in the face of the American people. Terrorists are cowards who don't confront their victims face to face and have little need for firearms. American citizens, on the other hand, are buying guns in record numbers to further their own cause for "homeland security." http://www.newsok.com/cgi-bin/show_article?ID=798505
