It was the community's first homicide in 20 years, authorities said. The 49-year-old clerk was identifed as Thomas Chase. He worked at the Minute Mart store in Fairview for the last three years. Police said the robbery report came in just before 9 p.m. Tuesday night. The gunman rushed into the store, demanded cigarettes, and then opened fire, according to Fairview's police chief. The clerk was shot twice in the back, and died later at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland. Police were talking to several witnesses but had no description of the suspect. He was last seen on foot. Customers placed bouquets of flowers at the door of the store on Wednesday in rememberance of Chase. (Copyright 2001 by The Associated Press.
