Cops say principal lied about gun to rush 911

September 24, 2002

BY ANA MENDIETA STAFF REPORTER

A Chicago Public Schools principal was arrested Monday for calling 911 and lying to authorities about the presence of a gun during a fight at her South Side school in order to get a quicker response from police officers.

Cheryl Marshall-Washington, 58, principal of Dyett Academic Center, was charged with disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor, for filing a false police report, authorities said.

After a fight involving six girls broke out at Dyett at 7:55 a.m., Marshall-Washington had a teacher's aide call 911 and tell police one of the students was waving a gun and another student had passed out, indicating she had been injured, said Wentworth District Lt. Robert Lopez.

Four cars rushed to Dyett, on 555 E. 51st. St., following orders for whenever there is a report of a gun in a school.

Those orders were implemented after the 1999 Columbine High School killings in Littleton, Colo.

"It turned out [Marshall-Washington] had just used that to get police there faster, and she admitted that,'' Lopez said of the gun report. "When you get a report like that police rush there, the adrenaline is flowing because they think they might get a situation inside a public school, and en route there an officer can get hurt."

It is unclear what precipitated the fight, which started with two girls and escalated into a physical altercation involving six girls, police and Chicago Public Schools officials said.

There is no indication the students carried any weapons, police said, and none of the girls was arrested, said Chicago Police Sgt. Robert Cargie.

Chicago Public Schools CEO Arne Duncan said the incident at Dyett is under investigation and declined to say whether Marshall-Washington will be disciplined. "I am very concerned with that and we are obviously going to investigate it fully and get to the bottom of it quickly,'' he said Monday.

Marshall-Washington has been principal of Dyett Academic Center, a middle school, since July 1999, school officials said.

She could not be reached for comment Monday night.

Marshall-Washington is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 12.

Duncan said he didn't know if the six girls had been suspended from school.
