NAUGATUCK - Federal agents seized weapons and ammunition Wednesday afternoon at a house on Celentano Drive, 11 days after law enforcement officials charged its owner with federal weapons violations.

Harry N. Zarkos Jr., 42, of 65 Celentano Drive, is charged with possession of two sawed-off shotguns. His lawyer, William S. Palmieri of New Haven, declined to comment except to say, "Mr. Zarkos is not guilty," and that he entered a plea of innocent.

Federal agents arrested Zarkos the night of Sept. 14 after they found two sawed-off shotguns during a search of the house, officials said.

FBI agents, assisted by the U.S. Treasury Department's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and state police, executed a search warrant after a day-long stakeout.

Federal agents returned to the house Wednesday evening. According to neighbors' accounts, the agents seized military-style ammunition cases and belts, several more firearms, a flak jacket and more than a dozen heavy wooden boxes.

According to court records obtained Thursday, Zarkos had to allow federal agents to seize the weapons in the house as part of any bail agreement.

On Sept. 16, Judge Peter Dorsey in U.S. District Court in New Haven set Zarkos' bail at $250,000, if certain conditions were met. Those conditions included having no contact with

members of the James Motorcycle or the Hell's Angels gangs; a 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew; surrendering all weapons, and submitting to electronic monitoring and drug testing.

Zarkos remains in custody pending a hearing to determine if all the pre-trial release conditions are met.

No date was set Thursday for that hearing.

According to an affidavit filed in support of the weapons charge, the FBI served a search warrant "looking for, among other things, the seizure of certain ammunition, firearms accessories and documentation."

Delcie Thibault, of the U.S. Attorney's office in New Haven, would not say what led to issuance of the search warrant, saying it was not yet a matter of public record. Calls to the FBI office in New Haven for comment were not returned Thursday.

A federal grand jury indicted Zarkos Sept. 18 for possession of two sawed-off shotguns without registering them in the National Firearms and Transfer Records. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
