Armed Against Fear Everyone Wants a Gun From Grandmothers to Gun SupportersNCM Online, Leticia Hernandez, December 19, 2001Since the Sept 11 attacks, firearm sales have increased and continue to rise, reports El Latino. According to the FBI, permit requests for weapon purchases are up 20 percent, and National Rifle Assocation (NRA) reports that the fire ranges are packed mainly by women.Darren Leung, who owns a firing range in the middle of Manhattan, offers security and the release from fear that people are seeking. Fourth generation Chinese, he carries a firearm on his belt, sports Border Patrol T-shirts, and spouts apocalyptic warnings. He explains that the increase in his clientele reflects people's fear and need to prepare against the unknown, the anything that might happen. At Leung's you can purchase gas masks, firearms and a half an hour at the firing range with what Leung calls "a half an hour of letting off steam against Bin Laden for $25. Cheaper than a therapist."The turning to firearms for security appears to be a national and equal opportunity phenomenon as neighbors in Redwood City, known as Little Michoacan--an enclave of Mexican immigrants from the Mexican state--are also searching for more security. One San Francisco-based artist who grew up in Redwood City, speaks of how quickly U.S. flags went up, another weapon, or rather shield against fear. Soon after Sept 11, folks in the neighborhood were abuzz about going to the firing ranges and looking into the weapon purchases. In the states that have had anthrax scares--New York, New Jersey, Washington and Florida--firearm sales have increased significantly. Leung explains that when people call, including grandmothers, to inquire about buying a gun, "they all get furious when I tell them that they have to wait eight months to get the permit." He assures that once you obtain the permit, however, there is not limit to what you can buy. http://www.ncmonline.com/content/ncm/2001/dec/1219arms.html
KABA NOTE: Has he read California law lately? There are indeed many limits on what lawful CA citizens can buy
