Expert links gun control to high rate of break-insDan RoweNational PostCanadians are more likely to have their homes broken into than Americans, and one expert believes Canada's strict gun-control laws may be part of the reason.A Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics report released yesterday said Canada had 954 break-ins per 100,000 residents last year, compared to 728 in the United States, although violent crime is far more prevalent south of the border. That has been the trend since the early 1990s, with property crime generally worse in Canada. Winnipeg and Vancouver had more break-and-enters and auto thefts per capita than any major U.S. city last year."In the United States, there are a lot more people with guns and they have the right to protect themselves and their property. That scares off a lot of burglars,'' said Dr. Marc Ouimet, a Universit? de Montr?al criminologist and a leading expert on crime statistics.Violent crimes such as homicide and robbery still occur far more often in the United States. Of the nine most populous U.S. cities, only Boston had a lower violent crime rate than Winnipeg, Canada's most violent big city. http://www.nationalpost.com/news/national/story.html?f=/stories/20011219/911229.html
