New Year's Gun Firing DiscouragedPHILADELPHIA (AP) - A man whose son was critically injured in a random New Year's Eve shooting joined city officials Wednesday in urging an end to the tradition of firing off weapons to ring in a new year. "It's a totally absurd tradition," said Gregory Jaskolka, whose son Joseph was injured three years ago. Jaskoklka was among several antigun advocates who helped launch this year's campaign against gunfire revelry. The New Year's Eve revelry, a tradition since the 19th century, has caused numerous problems but officials say its popularity has decreased in recent years. Police said 28 people were arrested last year for firearms violations while celebrating New Year's, down from 48 the previous year. "If you are out there and fire your weapon, you will be arrested and prosecuted," deputy police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson said. Joseph Jaskolka, then 11, was struck in the top of the head from a falling bullet, which is still lodged in fluid matter at the base of his skull. He walks with difficulty and uses a cane. The gunman was never found. -- http://www.lasvegassun.com/sunbin/stories/nat-gen/2001/dec/26/122608550.html
