I went to a gunshow a while back and a dealer had set up a display of market guns. These were the biggest black powder guns I have ever seen less a cannon. He stated that one shot could take out a large number of ducks. He said they were used around the turn of the century for harvesting ducks and geese for the markets.Has anyone here ever shot one of these guns and if so what is the recoil like?

I have seen pics of very large market guns that did look like cannons. A lot of them though were called punt guns. They were mounted horizontally in a boat and the shooter would lie in the boat horizontally as well, then they would just drift or paddle close to a flock of waterfowl and let fly. The Bass Pro Shop in Springfield has one in their store.

For a good writing on these guns check out the book "Chesapeak" by James Michener. It gives a good and sometimes funny account of them in addition to being a five star read.
So many guns to buy. So little money.

These were not shoulder-fired, but rather mounted and used like small cannon.
