Amsterdam-Legalize it, Dont criticize it

I just got back from a trip to Europe.
Spent two days in Amsterdam.
I have heard many from the legalize drugs camp, sight amsterdam as proof that legalization of drugs does not lead to more crime. For those who believe that, you should visit Amsterdam. The place is a toilet. I do not think there is one wall in the entire city that is not littered with graffiti.
The place was filthy, trash all over the place.
At night, I was exposed to a cacophony of breaking bottles, yelling, screaming, and in all of the places I have traveled in Europe, and the states, I can say without a doubt that the place I feared for my safety more than anywhere else was Amsterdam.
Unfortunately, I had to go out at night, and was acosted by several dirtbags begging for money and drugs. I almost hit one over his head with my clarinet case.
I was also warned the first night, while paying a restaurant bill with a credit card, that I should not use my card in Amsterdam, and if I had to, I should be very careful using it. The resturaunteur told me that credit card fraud in Amsterdam is rampant.
I was there once before ten years ago, and at that time, crime was bad, and was told that the beautiful people of Amsterdam have policed themselves since then, making the place much safer. Guess what? The policing did not last long, and the crime is as bad as it was ten years ago.
So what happend to the theory that acess to legal drugs(actually in AMSTERDAM IT IS NOT LEGAL, IT IS JUST "TOLERATEd") would result in a safer society, due to the fact that druggies would not have to comitt crimes to get there drugs. I went into a "hash bar/cafe"(there was about five of these joints on every block) and they actually had a menu of marijuana-different types, weights, etc. You can buy a bag of pot for less than what you would spend on a mug of beer-yet the city is probably the most dangerous city in all of Europe.
