does anybody know anything about those big tents seen at outfitter/big game camps? i'm thinking of building a "yurt"(mongolian style transportable hut) to hunt out of rather than plop down 600+$ for a wall tent and before i go thru the effort of design and plan, i'd like to know how comfortable those tents are in general in hunting camps....

i know, i know...sounds fishy, but i've had a mongolian fetish for some time and the yurts are pretty cool and prolly not too hard to make- plus i can't stand the thought of smelling any more of my last hunting companions farts cooped up in his poptop. as the mongolians say, "a yurt never hurt..."[This message has been edited by the loveable rat... Cool, but it looks expensive, actually, the material alone would cost a lot wouldnt it?

nah- 10-15 2x4's ripped, and then canvas...that might be more expensive than i think, but not as much as a wall tent same size pre-made. i like this picture post stuff...

That thing looks like a * to put up and take down.A buddy of mine who spends a lot of time each year in hunting camps bought one of those big military mess tent types from Cabella's. He puts carpet down on the ground and has a big rip-snortin' wood stove going in the tent and says it's just like home.I believe I'd buy myself a camper.

218-you want about 1/4" lath minimum i think...it all depends on how burly or expensive you want to go(or how crappy the 2x4 are), so 1/4 + 1/8 for kerf= 3/8 divide 3 4/8 by that =10 max...lowrdr- if hippies can do it- how hard could it be?. i do think that unfolding the lattice and putting in the roof poles are just a bit harder than cabelas tent, but those dudes get enough of my cash and i think i'd be just as warm w/ a woodstove in mine- the mongols live in some pretty harsh weather(though their covering is wool, they also have a stove). if, however, you'd donate your outfitter tent to me, i'd give this crazyness up. plus, i'd go around telling everyone that you're a pretty cool guy...barto- n. mongolia

Would it not be cheaper and easier to build your own outfitters style tent (unless of course you can talk the Beeman out of his). It seems to me you'd be buyin' less material and it'd be easier to put together.

undoubtably- but then i feel like i should just buy a better one. if i have to go thru the effort of saving 100-200 dollars, why not build something i'd like?
