Study indicates moderate drinking could ward off Alzheimer's dementia (London-AP) -- A new study indicates that daily moderate consumption of alcohol may ward off Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia.Dutch researchers say those who fared best were people who drank between one and three drinks a day. They had a 42 percent lower risk of developing dementia than did nondrinkers. The researchers base this on a six-year study of people age 55 and older who did not have Alzheimer's at the start. At the end, about 200 of the 54-hundred participants had developed the disease. But the researchers say moderation is key. The adverse effect of excess alcohol is beyond question. The study is in a British journal, The Lancet.
