Any pro's or cons on IDPA & IPSC?

Well there's a new gun club/range (the only range) up and running. Seems as though the fellas are totally committed to IPSC and just about everything is set-up for pistol shooting matches. O.K., fine whatever, it also has a rifle range and fledgling clay throwing area to be developed. I'm used to shooting in my backyard hillbilly range but these boys are serious about the pistol matches. Two questions I didn't get a decent answer about were:Whats the difference between IDPA & IPSC?How much fun is this? I'm kinda casual and can't get too worked up about going fast, jumping through hoops or whatever.Any input is welcome before I decide to write a check. (Which I probably will anyway just to try it out, because I rarely turn down a shooting opportunity).

IDPA is geared more towards everyday carry/situations with normal handguns.IPSC allows "race" guns and holsters, extended magazines, etc. that no one carries. Both are great clubs.

Well booger, you ask an interesting question. IPSC is all about going fast, jumping through hoops (and over things and under things and running a loooong way). IDPA is about a different set of rules with its own pecularities. NRA action pistol is yet another game where speed (of shooting - not of foot) is the key. Each is fun, each has drawbacks, each can get expensive. My club prefers what we call IPSC Lite! We use a little of each. (Last month we had a match that had one stage of moving targets, one of bowling pins, one of falling plates and the last as an 'assault' course with all 3 combined - with a few pepper poppers and 'no-shoot/hostages added for variety.

Sounds like fun, but can an old fart with bad arthritis in hips and knees participate in this? I'd sure like to, but can't do the obstacle course stuff any more.

Thanks, I can finally log into the forum again. I signed up, of course, and will go check out the next IPSC event on the 20th. Ahhhh yes, another good reason to buy more guns and bullets!!!
