Trip to CMP South store or...Update!!

I finally have everything I need to get with the CMP Garand "program". I don't have one, always wanted one, never bought one at a gun show due to ignorance of the weapon. The depth of the the technical nomenclature and serial numbers etc. is frankly overwhelming, (bent operating rod etc. etc.) Thus.........

The CMP south store is about 3 hours away, I'd have to pay 10% sales tax on the basic $730 rifle, and simply make my pick based on looks and a good "hunch". I want a fun shooter that may have a battle worn look, would be just fine. Pristine features & stock not necessary. I like old guns with a story.

OR

Mail it in? Their pick might be as good or better than mine, no sales tax, and delivered to my door while I'm sipping bourbon in my fuzzy slippers. No driving, no sales tax. Unwrap it like Ralphie with a Daisy Red Ryder Lever Action Carbine on Christmas Day.

What say ye oh GunBroker Swamis of Garand wisdom?

Or, you can wait until Mark Christian lists an M1 on GB, & posts a plug on the GD forum. Mark's descriptions are always spot on, & you may want an all-USGI rifle, rather than one with a commercial barrel & new commercial wood. (Or not.)

Bought two of M Christain's rifles.(stole one) Want a sure thing. Contact him when he puts one up. Can't go wrong with the Garand Man.
Comfort to know you get one that's "right" and good.

Yeah, I have followed several, maybe all of MarkC's auctions. I'm locked in at the $730 budget price, which won't buy the better rifles, especially at auction. I have learned a good bit from his auctions and posts.

Bought one by mail & picked out another when they brought a semi-truck load to Camp Pendleton. The one I picked out is FAR better. Sold the first one a short time ago for as much as I paid for both of them.
They had to take the one back to Alabama & ship it to me but no Kalifornia sales tax, or dealer fee or waiting period or DROS fee.

I made the trip Saturday and it was worth it. I spent quite some time obsessing over the selection, the staff was phenomenally helpful, as I am a newbie to Garands. This is a spring of 1944 Winchester with the usual rebuilt Springfield parts, original or at least worn with character, "GI" wood. The stock has a crossed cannon cartouche and some other inspector marks. The bayonet I've had for 30 years but just now have the rifle to go with it. Loading enbloc clips now and watching the Italian Grand Prix, function test begins as soon as the rest of the house wakes up.

    Another view.

Nice score on the Winchester !

What was the current stock like. Last time I went was to the old store and they had a stock of about 300-400 on the racks.

Total was perhaps 75 guns on the rack, down from the glory days I'm sure. Several high dollar collector grades, several rebuilt in .308 and about 30 in my price range, i.e. Garand newbie po-folk price range.

I didn't want a "new" stock or better, perfect gun, I wanted a relic with a story to tell.

They had drill rifles for $380, good for parts or wall hanger.
