Blown Up Gold Cup is Back From Gunsmith

Did a great repair job. Gunsmith said I am one lucky dude, said it had to be a double charge which would be 11 gr. W231 under a 230FMJ!!
I used to load for this gun using Lee's Progressive 1000 press which I guess somehow double charged at least one cartridge. I am disassembling the remaining 150 rounds I have left of this lot.

The smith had to mill the barrel out of the slide in several pieces, it's the only way he could get it out. He straightened the bulged slide and frame and put in a 70 series NM barrel and bushing. Charged me $200.00 for all. Good deal I think.

At the range it's as accurate as ever and works just fine. The only difference was it shot 1" above the point of aim which was easily fixed by lowering the rear sight. I'm as happy as a pig in the poop pile! No offense Saxon.

YOU COULD SAVE TIME BY WEIGHING EA ONE, & ONLY TAKE APART THE HEAVY OR LIGHT ONES FROM A NORMAL............... SIT YOURSELF IN A POSITION WHEN YOUR LOADING, SO YOU CAN SEE INTO THE CASE WITH THE POWDER CHARGE IN IT BEFORE YOU PUT THE BULLET ON IT. IT CAN BE DONE, I USE THE SAME PRESS, I CAN TELL (RIGHT NOW IF THE CHARGE) WRONG.....OR CHANGE POWDER, USE ONE THAT YOU CANT DOUBLE CHARGE, LIKE ,UNIQUE, 700X, BLUE DOT, HS-7...

Thanks Ferg, I never thought of that. I have a good digital scale so it should be easy.

Ferg. is right. Sit so you can see the case after the powder has
dropped. I use a RCBS Green Machine for .45 ACP, and sit so I can
see the case to make sure there wasn't a double charge.

Don't send flowers when I die. Send money now, I can buy more ammo.

I used to have 2 progressive loaders dedicated to 9MM and 45ACP. I sold both of them last year through this auction, I just wasn't that comfortable with them. I now load on an RCBS Rockchucker single stage press only. While this does take longer at least I can inspect my loads at each stage of the loading process which I am much more comfortable with.

You lucked out in a bunch of ways on this one.
The event reinforces the point that a handloader can't allow his attention to drift no matter how routine the operation.
Maybe it's a good time to stop when your mind starts to wander.
