I just got my new Dillon Precision Catalog, read the "Zero Good Sense" article. A fifth grader at Oldsmar Elementary School near Tampa, Florda got arrested for drawing a picture of a gun in class. And the principal was braging about it...I call information and got the phone # to the school is (813) 855-7316. Its to early right now, but I'm going to call and talk to the principal later about it.

I bet he pointed that drawing at another student. Glad it was not loaded. We need to ban pencils and paper since our kids are drawing these terrible things.Slap that Principal on the back and tell him "good job ole boy." Give him a raise and promote him to County Board of Education President.

The "zero tolerance" attitude of schools is way out of line. The school my oldest son goes to (high school) is so screwed up on this issue. Example: My son has a necklace that has fairly large links, but none the less it is a necklace and not a chain. He had a teacher walk up to him one morning and told him he could not wear a chain to school because it is considered a weapon. My son explained to the teacher that it was only a necklace and the teacher got mad and told him to give him the chain. He confiscated the necklace and took it to the office and gave it to the vice-principle. I went to the school the next day to talk to the vice-principle, his view was that he supported the teachers decision that the necklace was to be considered a chain and it was not to be worn to school. I asked him, "What about the large metal belt buckles the "cowboys" were wearing to school"? He said that a chain is more dangerous and easily accessible. I told him that it takes less time to take a belt off than it does to take off a necklace. He stated that with the necklace you could just yank it off. (remember he called it a chain earlier, I'd like to see him yank a chain off of his neck). I then asked him if he had any idea of how many potential weapons there were in the school, even right there in his office. He started getting a little ticked off at me now. I told him there were several things on his desk that could be used as a weapon, including the pen and pencil set in his shirt pocket. I explained to him that a person could use a sharpened pencil as a dagger and stab someone in the heart in under 2 seconds. He really didn't like that and started clamouring that it was school policy not to allow chains in school and that it is up to the teachers and administrators to decide what is considered a weapon. He went on to say that since I was a concerned parent and I had come in to talk to him about it that he would not write up a "letter of contact" of the incident (that goes into a students permanent file). Well, two days later I got a letter of contact in the mail and a copy WAS sent to Austin to be put in his permanent file.I take my kids to school and pick them up so I get to see what goes on at the school. Here is the part I have not mentioned: The school my kids go to is controlled by redneck goat ropers. To date I have not heard of any of the guys that wear the heavy oversized belt buckles have to take off the buckles as they could be used as a weapon. (I have seen them used as a weapon when I was in school, that 2 inch wide belt swinging 1-2 pounds of metal make one hell of a nasty mark on human flesh). I see them being worn every day to school. They do not like members of the male gender to have hair over their ears and over the shirt collar in the back. My sons hair was shoulder length at the time this happened, he wears hiking boots not cowboy boots, he wears t-shirts (with rock groups or sayings on them) not cowboy cut western wear shirts.Since this happened my son was told by the soccer coach that he needed to go to the office and be put in a different class, because he didn't want to cut his hair, which by the way is well within the school dress code. He has now considered a possible problem student just because he doesn't conform and asks questions (I was not raised to be a sheeple and neither will my children). He has had SAC, which is the similar to detention only it is during school rather than after school, this has happened twice. He recieved after school detention for not bring his report card back to school the day after he recieved it, he explained that I had not signed it yet which was my fault not his, the teacher didn't care that I was at fault not him. When she wrote the detention slip she put that he would have to stay after school for 45 minutes. The day of detention was to be Tuesday, BUT the date she put on the detention slip was for Sunday. I started to take him up to school on Sunday to see if she was there and then when she did not show up take the slip to the principal and ask why she did not show up, and since she made a mistake that she should have to sit in detention hall just like students that make mistakes. I decided not to because that would only piss off the teacher and she is already riding his back too much. Just goes to show that those in power always want more control over those under them.

Tex, teachers have a tough job in today's society, trying to serve many masters rather than set an example and convey knowledge. But that said, administrators & actions like this sure don't help their cause. What a group of petty, incompetent tyrants with whom you must deal! Incidentally, they have plenty company in the wooded hinterlands of NH.

Free, I would tell them to meet you in court. Let the court decide if it is a necklace or a chain. Keep very accurate records of his treatment and let them know you are doing so. I would also have him wear a buckle like the other kids wear just to see what happens. I cannot see why anyone tolerates this BS. I would also file a complaint against the principal for misconduct. Maybe you could even call him and the teacher who is the problem at home daily to let them know you are concerned for his safety, you know, mess with his mind. After all, they are public employees with the best interest of your child in mind. I think you know what I mean.

SOME school administrators have common sense and courage, but those are becoming rare commodities.Last year when #2 son was in eight grade, he carried his pocket knife to school. Forgot he had it in his pocket, he says. I believe him, but then he did something really dumb. He showed it to another student. When the principal asked him if he had a knife, he cooperated and handed it over.Do you know what the principal did? This was an offense that can result in expulsion, but he took up the knife and then told my son he would release the knife to me. Of course, the boy wanted his knife back so he told be about it right away. I was grateful that the principal did not take further action, and irritated that my son had such a lapse, so I let the knife stay in the principal's desk for about a month before I went to get it.Living in a small town (pop. 1596) has its advantages.

Ever seen those belt buckle .22s? I think you can even get'em in .22WMR.
We only have a few special years with our children in which they desire our time, attention, and love. After that time is over, it is gone forever, and we will be the ones that desire their time, attention, and love. Make those few, short years count - don't miss it!!!

You are talking about the North American Arms mini-revolver. I have one in .22wmr, I don't know if the belt buckle holster is available for the .22wmr model. I like to carry it in my pocket, as a last resort backup kinda thing. It has a 1 3/8" barrel. You couldn't hit the broad side of a barn at 25ft with it, really... I like to carry CCI .22wmr Rat-shot in it. Figure it would deform someones face pretty good if my 1911 ever got jamed and I was close enough. They are really, really loud though. I'd never shoot it without earplugs unless I absolutely positively had too. And you could hide it anywhere, in you hat, in you sock, up you sleave, up your.. never mind you get the point. They also make them in .22short. Now that puppy is small.
