a guy i work with had owned/rented (im not sure) a little camp by a lake in conn. he said his kid had found a .22 cal.rifle in the woods with a bent barrel( i guess he said the kid was shooting stuff up till his father found out and sent the rifle around a tree)now the guy i work with has this rifle at home, no pistol permit,f.i.d or anything to do with legal possesion of this rifle.to top it all off he has cut the barrel down past the bend (isnt that illegal?)ive told him id take it, run the numbers and if its legit ill replace the barrel, he says "no","i`ll keep it in case someone breaks into my house".......i dont want to see this guy go up the river so i need info on what can happen if he gets busted, thanx for any and all replies.

That thing could be a murder weapon!! The story about the kid and his father could be true but if he just found it you never know.He needs to turn it in NOW and spend some money on a house gun.A single shot 12 gauge is only $85.00 brand new.And he can get a Maverick pump new for $150.00.I doubt he would hit anybody with that butchered barrel anyway,He will just get himself in deep doo doo.

    I'm with Williams.
Donate the weapon to the Police Department. He doesn't want to have a weapon with a criminal history. 22 rifles are cheap and abundant. Heck, even WALMART carries em! As for contemplating using an illegal short barreled PLINKING rifle for home defense I can only conclude your friend must be an idiot. Even if he manages to successfully defend himself, he'll quickly be escorted to a prison cell, and gun owners will have another bad blemish on our already tarnished reputation.
Save him from himself, buy him large orange whistle that's too large for him to choke on...

I think you know your friend well enough to know hs telling the truth. But its going to be a lot harder to convince a Judgein the event the rifle was used!!

I wasnt trying to imply he was lying about the story of where the gun came from Im just saying he may have been mis-informed on where it came from.I apologize if I came off that way.Im just saying a found gun is better off in the melting pot then in a good friends house. And if it was used god forbid it could solve a case and take a dangerous individual off the streets.

Since he has already cut the barrel, it is probably to short to be legal now, and I would hesitate turning it into any police agency. The chances are, that they would arrest him for possessing an illegal firearm, no matter what the story is. By all means dispose of the thing, permanently. Cut it up, make sure it gets into a landfill, something. Or if you have a buddy that is a LEO that you can trust, give it to him for disposal. It is not worth going to jail.!!

If I knew then, what I know now.

I sincerely doubt the Police Department would arrest him for turning in a weapon he found. While he shouldn't have cut the barrel down, he could always say he found it like that

My sentiments exactly Seth!Innocent mistake and what they dont know wont hurt you.I hope he didnt cut it too much to where if it was used for crime they cant match slugs but he needs that gun like he needs to walk South Central L.A in a klan robe.He didnt remove the serial number too did he?

pantera, you're in the PRK (People's Republik of Kennedy), right? This is a no brainer - tell your friend to get rid of this thing pronto. Regardless of whether the provenance is correct or not, short barrel / unregistered = huge big trouble. Even if he used it to save Teddy's life, they'll throw the book at him if he's found with it.

Call the police dept. and have the serial #'s checked. If it isn't stolen then its yours legally. I'd either turn it into a wall hanger, or have the barrel straightened out. Replace the barrel or something. Sounds like it might be a fun little project gun.

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.
