How many of you are HAM Radio operators? I am just wondering, because I was surprised by the level to which our telephone and computer-network sytems were clogged on Tuesday, 9-11-01. If we had sustained an attack that actually targeted our communication systems, we could have been even more crippled. It took my wife 45 minutes to get through to me on my cell phone, and I was in Detroit NOT NYC or Washington. When I first met my father-in-law, he introduced me to the HAM radio. I am still not licensed, but I am seriously considering taking the tests now. In the event of another tragedy, one that might target us in different ways, I think we need to consider having a PLAN B. HAM radio operators actually practice emergency communication skills and, in fact, hold competitions on how fast they can setup a communications grid. Many of us have grown very used to having electricity, telephone service, city water and sewage, Internet access to post on GB and natural gas. But, if these things suddenly became unavailable (for whatever reason) would we still be able to function? How strong would we be then? I know that I have taken steps in preparation of such an event, but I doubt that the majority of our country has...Just a thought.
